World Cup Prize Money - How Much Is it?

WORLD CUP PRIZE MONEY - HOW MUCH IS IT?

BY CATHY NICOLE CARR
The world's biggest football competion is drawing to a close, with it looking possible that France might retain the cup - the first time in 60 years that a country has won twice in a row.

There have been many upsets, penalty shootouts galore, last-minute winners and equalisers, and above all, drama. Argentina's loss to Saudi Arabia in the opening week of the tournament seems ages ago, especially as they are now in the final, whilst the fairytale stories of Morocco and Australia reaching the final rounds, the failures of Belgium and Germany to qualify from their groups and more England penalty heartbreak has made it a World Cup to remember.

Argentina now face France to battle it out for the title.

But just how much do countries get for participating in the World Cup, and how much do the winners net?

Well, each nation received £1.2million simply for qualifying for the group stages. Even though this seems a relatively small sum for most of the countries involved, it would have been a great boon to underdeveloped countries such as Costa Rica and Iran.

FIFA have allocated a total of $440 million in prize money for Qatar 2022, an increase of $40 million on the previous tournament in 2018.

The champions will receive a record $42 million!

Prior to 2006 the prize money was never more than $10 million, but as World Cub revenue increased, FIFA were put under pressure to increase the prize money.

Year Prize money (USD)

2022 $42m
2018 $38m
2014 $35m
2010 $30m
2006 $20m
2002 $8m
1998 $6m
1994 $4m

The World Cup Final is at 3pm GMT (10am EST) on Sunday December 18th.
