MAP SHOWS SCARLET FEVER HOTSPOTS
BY CATHY NICOLE CARR
The symptoms of Strep A to look out for are:
- high temperature
- sore throat
- swollen neck glands
- a sandpaper like rash
The same bacteria can cause other, less serious conditions, including strep throat, tonsillitis, the skin infections impetigo and cellulitis.
As UK cases of Strep A have increased, so too have more serious cases of both scarlet fever and the more invasive Group A Strep disease.
The outbreak has so far taken the lives of nine children, the majority of whom are under ten years old.
