MAP SHOWS SCARLET FEVER HOTSPOTS

The map below shows the incidences of Strep A that have been reported since 4th December.

The symptoms of Strep A to look out for are:

- high temperature
- sore throat
- swollen neck glands
- a sandpaper like rash


The same bacteria can cause other, less serious conditions, including strep throat, tonsillitis, the skin infections impetigo and cellulitis.

As UK cases of Strep A have increased, so too have more serious cases of both scarlet fever and the more invasive Group A Strep disease.

The outbreak has so far taken the lives of nine children, the majority of whom are under ten years old.
