GIANT RIVER BEAST MAKES WELCOME COME BACK TO AMAZON RIVER BASIN

If you have ever watched the hit show 'River Monsters' with Jeremy Wade the Famous TV fisherman, you may be aware of the 'pirarucu' or arapaima, native to the Amazon River Basin.

The prehistortic fish that can weigh up to 220 kilos and grow 10 feet in length, they have a distinctive red scales, underdeveloped fins and a gaping maw to cement their monster status. And due to sustainable fishing laws their adult numbers have increased 10 fold in some of the basin's river ways and quadrupled in others which is really positive news.

A single large adult can fetch the $100 for the local fisher men who catch them with nets and wooden clubs, which creates a huge boost to the local economy and allows the very secluded communities to purchase solar panel and supplement the diesel generators they use for electricity.

This is a colossal win for sustainability which has seen the number of pirarucu in the Carauari region increase from 4,916, in 2011, to 46,839 in 2021.
