FAMILIES UNABLE TO AFFORD A BASIC HOT MEAL EVERY DAY
BY VICTORIA WADLEY
Jeff Simpson, a chef and driving force behind the food distribution for a Community Association for 14 years, has been providing hot meals to some of the poorest residents in the area between 8am to 3pm, five days a week.
Jeff has said 'People don't want anything fancy or spectacular, they just want a basic hot meal every day and they'll be happy, but they can't even afford that.'
Strathfoyle Community Association currently delivers hot food to more than 35 older people residing in the Strathfoyle and Maydown areas of Northern Ireland. However, this number is rising due to the soaring cost of living currently gripping the country. The association is on a tight budget and is also struggling with the constant increasing cost of ingredients. The main concern of the association is if they were to include a delivery charge or increase prices that some of the most vulnerable people would need to cancel the service, having a detrimental impact on their health.
The organisation is one that has partnered with The Independent who have created a 'On the Breadline Christmas Appeal' in partnership with Comic Relief hoping to ease some of the pressure on this any many charities as the cost of living crisis continues.
